Taste Tester Tom requested Pfifernusse this year. They are a spicy German cookie that I also like. I gave it a try and they are really good.
Here’s what you’ll need.
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup white sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup molasses
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1 egg
- 3 tbsp honey
- 1 tsp ground anise seed
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp cardamom
- 1/2 tsp all spices
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp cloves
- 1/2 tsp ground pepper (white or black)
- 1/4 tsp ground ginger
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar, for dusting
In a sauce pan heat butter, sugars, molasses and honey until melted and well combined. Remove from heat and let cool. Add egg and anise, stir and set aside.
In a separate bowl combine flour baking soda and spices. Gradually add molasses mixture to flour and mix together well.
Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
Shape chilled dough into 1 inch balls. Place on a cookie sheet that is lined with parchment paper and bake for 10-12 minutes in a pre-heated 325 degree oven. When cool, roll in powdered sugar. – Tasty!
TIP:
- I used a melon baller to shape cookies. It worked great.
